Why Do Kua Number Calculators Give Different Results?

Check the year boundary, digit rule and handling of special values, including a transparent note about our current implementation.

When two Kua calculators disagree, compare their inputs and arithmetic before comparing their interpretations. Year boundaries and stated conventions can matter, but an implementation error is also possible. A different answer should not automatically be excused as a different school of thought.

Four checks that make a comparison useful

A reproducible Kua comparison
CheckRecord from both calculators
InputBirth date, calendar used and the formula category selected.
Year boundaryWhether the year changes at Lunar New Year, a stated solar boundary or another rule.
Digit and century ruleWhether all four year digits or only the last two are used, and which constants accompany that choice.
Special valuesHow zero, 5 and totals above 9 are handled.

Traditional calculators commonly ask for a male or female formula category. That is a convention of the calculation, not a general statement about a person’s identity. If you are unsure which convention a practitioner would use, ask them to explain it rather than selecting an answer merely to obtain a preferred direction.

What our current tool actually does

At publication, the Eastern Fate Guide implementation first obtains a Chinese-calendar related year from the browser where available. On unsupported browsers it uses a rough February 10 fallback, which is not reliable near Lunar New Year. It then reduces all four digits of that year.

For the male category it subtracts that reduction from 10 before 2000 or 9 from 2000 onward, adjusts a non-positive result by adding 9 and maps 5 to 2. For the female category it adds 5 before 2000 or 6 from 2000 onward, reduces the result and maps 5 to 8. These are observations of the current code, not an endorsement of its accuracy.

A concrete discrepancy, not just a boundary difference

The published World of Feng Shui method uses the last two digits with its century-dependent adjustments. Mixing a full-year digit reduction with constants intended for another formulation can change the result. The date below is well away from the early-year boundary, so that boundary does not explain the difference.

Worked arithmetic example: June 15, 1990, female category
ImplementationReduction and additionOutput
Current Eastern Fate Guide code1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1; 1 + 5 = 6.6
Published last-two-digit method9 + 0 = 9; 9 + 5 = 14, then 5.5 before the selected method’s special handling.

How to ask for clarification

Send the two URLs, the date tested, selected category, outputs and any published formula notes. Avoid sending unrelated birth documents. Ask the practitioner to show the effective year, digit reduction and special-value rule in sequence.

If a tool does not disclose its method, an authoritative-looking result screen cannot supply that missing information. A clear explanation is more valuable than a claim that one number is universally correct without specifying the assumptions.

Only then interpret the labels

After verifying the calculation under the chosen method, read the East and West group explanation. Even a correctly calculated personal number is not a complete review of a property. The plan, orientation, actual room use and practical constraints still matter.
