What is BaZi? A beginner’s guide to the Four Pillars
BaZi is a traditional Chinese interpretive system using the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, giving the eight characters behind the name. A zodiac animal describes only one part of this framework.
What a consultation adds
A practitioner interprets the chart in relation to an agreed question. A useful explanation identifies the information used, the calculation conventions and the limits of the interpretation. Two people who share a zodiac animal do not necessarily share the same full chart.
What a starter tool cannot tell you
Our starter provides simplified year and month indications. It does not calculate a complete four-pillar chart, Day Master or luck cycles. Birthplace and time shown in its result are context, not timezone-corrected chart inputs. Treat it as orientation, especially near calendar boundaries.
These are traditional cultural interpretations, not scientifically established personality measurements or predictions.
Can you request a BaZi reading without your birth time?
Yes, you can make an inquiry, but you should tell the practitioner that your birth time is unknown or approximate. Missing time limits the chart information available. Whether a limited reading fits your question depends on the practitioner and method.
Do not turn a guess into a fact
For example, if a family member remembers only “in the morning,” report that uncertainty rather than entering 9:00 as a confirmed time. Ask which parts of the interpretation depend on the missing hour, and whether the question can be addressed responsibly without it.
What to ask before agreeing
- Can this question be addressed with the information available?
- Which calculations and conclusions remain uncertain?
- How are historical time zones and day changes treated?
- Will those assumptions be recorded in the deliverable?
Do not send identity documents simply to begin an inquiry. Start with the question and the fact that the time is uncertain.
How to prepare your floor plan for a Feng Shui consultation
A readable plan helps the practitioner understand the space and ask focused questions. Ask what they need after the scope is agreed; a labelled sketch may be a useful starting point if a formal plan is unavailable.
- Mark the entrance, doors, windows and current room uses.
- Add approximate dimensions and fixed features that cannot move.
- Show relevant furniture, such as beds and desks.
- Mark compass orientation only if known, with how it was measured.
- List the rooms and everyday activities you want to discuss.
A useful example
“The desk is beside the bedroom door, and moving it is limited by a fixed wardrobe” gives more context than “the room feels wrong.” Separate observable constraints from the traditional interpretation being requested.
Keep the material proportionate
Remove names, access codes, unrelated people and other private details from photos and plans. Confirm who receives the material before sharing it. Do not change structural walls, wiring, fire exits or ventilation based on a metaphysical review; these require qualified professional assessment.
Kua number vs. BaZi: what is the difference?
A personal Kua number is used in a traditional directional framework associated with Feng Shui. BaZi uses birth pillars as an interpretive framework for personal themes. They answer different kinds of questions and one is not a substitute for the other.
Choose by your question
For a first look at a traditional direction grouping, try the Kua tool. For a personal pattern question, learn about BaZi. For an actual room or property decision, a Kua result alone cannot account for the plan, entrance, surroundings or practical constraints.
Read the conventions
Calendar boundaries and calculation conventions matter. The current Kua tool uses a lunar-year convention; the BaZi starter uses simplified calendar rules. Confirm the practitioner’s method instead of treating a free result as an exact consultation chart.
